Why Sustainable Materials Are No Longer a “Nice-to-Have” in Pet Supplies (And 3 Real-World Examples)

If you’ve been selling pet products into the US or European market for more than a couple of years, you’ve already felt the shift. It’s not just about organic treats or bamboo bowls anymore. Buyers—whether they're big-box retailers or boutique online stores—are now asking the same question about almost every SKU: “What's it made of, and where does it go when the pet is done with it?”

This isn’t a fringe concern. The EU’s GPSR and the tightening of REACH are part of it, sure. But the bigger driver is end-consumer pressure. Biodegradable Fibers – The Premium Play for Conscious Consumers

Recycled materials solve the “waste input” problem. Biodegradables solve the “waste output” problem—what happens when the product finally wears out. And that’s a bigger selling point than you might think, especially in markets like the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and coastal US cities where landfill concerns are front of mind.

The most practical option right now isn’t PLA (which can be brittle for leashes), but rather natural-fiber blends: hemp, organic cotton, and even wool from regenerative farms. We’ve seen a small but growing number of boutique brands launch 100% hemp leashes with brass hardware. They’re not cheap, but they command double the retail price of standard nylon leashes, and they sell out consistently because the story is so clean: “When this leash finally wears out, you can compost it.”

For pet beds, some manufacturers are using organic cotton canvas for the outer shell and kapok or hemp fiber for the inner filling.
